What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a specialized teeth straightening system customized to the wearer’s bite. A series of clear removable trays are used to gradually move the teeth into place over the course of several months. Each tray in the series is specifically designed to apply controlled force to a specific tooth or teeth to allow for the optimal movement in the teeth straightening process. In order to be effective, trays must usually be worn for at least 22 hours a day, removing only for eating, drinking, brushing or flossing.

Invisalign vs. Metal Braces

It used to be that braces were the best (and only!) option for achieving a perfectly straight smile. Invisalign, however, offers a more convenient and comfortable way to get straightened teeth, with benefits including:

● No restrictions on food and drink
● Virtually invisible
● Very comfortable with less irritation to mouth
● Easy removal for cleaning
● Shorter treatment period
● Fewer trips to the orthodontist

As with metal braces, there may be some initial discomfort each time new pressure is applied (in the case of Invisalign, for a day or two after a new tray is started). Invisalign also requires visits to the orthodontist (albeit not as many as traditional braces) to ensure proper progress is being made. This is not the case with other clear aligner systems done without orthodontist supervision, so be wary that knock-offs may not be effective.

The decision to choose Invisalign or traditional metal braces will depend on the individual’s teeth alignment and dental health.
